Military to Civilian Jobs
Safety at Home: How to go From the Military to Civilian Jobs
It’s tough out there for a soldier. And still very dangerous. The courageous men and women who take on the responsibility of active duty still face the possibility of having to give their lives for our safety. But they sign up and serve with pride. But few people decide to make the military their career. Once you’ve been discharged, how do you transition to civilian life and a civilian job?
Support the Vets?
Even though everyone claims to support the troops, it is not uncommon to find discrimination against military veterans in the privately owned workplace. Military service, which can often includes experience that translates well to an office setting, can be overlooked or dismissed by an uninformed HR manager. Many veterans, who put their other goals aside to serve, often are repaid very poorly when they try to pick up where they left off.
Enter the happy medium: the federal job. Transitioning from military to civilian jobs does not have to be difficult, and federal jobs have several advantages over private sector jobs in this respect.
Federal Jobs vs. Civilian Jobs
The job market is fierce. With the economy slowly recovering, it will continue to be challenging to put oneself ahead of the pack and manage to land an interview, let alone an actual job. Jobs in the private sector are more highly sought after, which gives an advantage to those looking for federal jobs.
Military experience is more appreciated in the federal sector, as well. A hiring manager for a federal office is more likely to understand the nature of an individual’s service and will be able to see the practical applications of skills learned while in active service.
Put Your Experience to Work
No one knows the importance of every individual within a unit more than a veteran. Veterans are more likely to volunteer for special projects outside their normal job description, work better in team settings and motivate each other. Employers in the private sector don’t usually know this. Federal employers do.
Now, where to find those jobs? There is a federal presence in every major town in America, and the government is hiring around the country. But you are unlikely to find them listed on Monster, Craigslist or Careerbuilder. Usually, these jobs are listed on little niche sites, or buried deep within a federal branch website. Not only is it challenging to find them, but updates are sporadic and rarely reflect the number of jobs at are actually available.
That’s where we come in: it’s our job is to bring those jobs to you, in a convenient location. Sign up now and get a head start on the rest of your life.
