Federal Jobs
Well-paying federal jobs are easily found on a number of government maintained websites and a host of privately operated websites. One of the most important websites available for locating a Federal Job is the USAJobs.gov website or our own aggregated federal job postings page. Furthermore, each individual government agency also maintains its own recruiting and hiring programs so investigating a particular agency is also always advised. However, in obtaining a Federal Job one of the most common reasons that applicants either fail in having their application considered or fail in getting hired is because they did not follow the instructions in the job announcement itself.
One of the most important aspects of finding and making application to a federal job is locating and understanding a position’s Vacancy Announcement. Every Federal Job that is put on the market is accompanied by a Vacancy Announcement. The Vacancy Announcement includes a series of components that must be thoroughly reviewed and understood before applying for the Federal Job:
- The Basic Information: this data identifies the position’s job title, the Federal Agency making the announcement and the name of a contact person
- Who Can/May Apply: this is important to review because many vacancy announcements target specific groups of people such as existing federal employees. To the general Federal Job applicant, look for phrases such as “Open to every U.S. citizen” or similar
- Opening and Closing Dates: failure to apply within this date window ensures that you will not even be considered for the position
- Pay Range for the Position: this is self-explanatory
- Series and Grade Rating: this denotes the General Schedule or GS ranking given to most federal employees but can sometimes be referred to as Wage Grade or WG. In both cases, these letters are followed by a numeral indicating level which runs from 1 to 15 with 15 being the highest in salary and authority
- Potential for Promotion: this component indicates how far up you can move in terms of wage and authority within this position
- Job Duties for the Position: this should be self explanatory
- Basic and Additional Qualifications: these sections state what the minimum education and experience levels are for the vacancy as well as any additional qualifications that might be desired. Periodically these additional qualifications are listed as Knowledge, Skills and Abilities or KSAs that might be required and you must pay attention to these
- How to Apply: this is one of the most important components of applying to a Federal Agency and the instructions in this section must be followed exactly
- Conditions for Employment: this section describes any kind of related requirements in order for the candidate such as having a background investigation, obtaining a certain level of security clearance or undergoing drug testing
